Youth Development Activity in Conflict Ridden Areas

Construction of Street Pavement

Falahi Tanzeem Bagh Satara and Falahi Tanzeem Ghuwaraijo completed there schemes "Construction of Street Pavement" and "PCC Pavement" in District Governance Community Driven Programme under CDLD Policy. Senior Minister Local Government, Rural Development and Elections Mr. Inayatullah Khan inaugurated the schemes and himself inspected the work stressed on the fact that one of the success of this programme lies on transparent and efficient working of CBO's. SRSP is partner in Social Mobilization with KP Government and is funded by European Union.

Drying of Vegetable and Fruits

Under SRSP – GEF (Gender Equity Fund) project funded by the Government of Australia, a total of 40 women trained on modern tools & techniques “Drying of Vegetable and Fruits” at villages Tehlkar and Kuz Shonial of UC Shawar, District Swat. The five days training comprised of drying techniques of onion, tomato, spinach, ladies finger, red persimmon and peer. The same beneficiary women (40) have also been provided with tool kits. The objective is to keep vegetable and fruits safe from spoilage and sell them in the market for increase in income.
The Municipal Services Programme and Urban Policy Unit at the Planning & Development Department, Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa hired SRSP’s Human Institutional Development Center services to deliver training to 40 Government Officials. The officials are from Forest Department, Public Health Engineering Department, Environmental Protection Agency, Peshawar Development Authority, Agriculture Research Institute and WSSP are participating in a three-day course on Gender Integration in Development Programme. The short -course has been designed to enable those involved in policy and decision making to develop an improved understanding of integrating gender in initiatives that impact lives.
SRSP in partnership with PPAF has started Program for Poverty Reduction in Bajaur agency. Under the Education component, the program will increase enrollment and improve access to basic services at schools by extending financial and equipment support. Sixteen schools have been identified in close coordination with Political Administration and Education Department. Recently an event was organized to distribute cheques among members of village organizations (VO) to start the construction work in these schools. The event was attended by representatives of Local Support Organizations (LSOs), Political Administration, local elders and SRSP.




SRSP Improving Infrastructure in Khyber Agency

Around 7,000 people will get benefit from 7 community built infrastructure schemes includes five drinking water supply schemes (tubewell), one each irrigation channel and protection wall worth 12,756,112 PKR. Cheques were distributed among community representatives in Khyber Agency. Political Agent, community representatives, agency officials and SRSP were present on the occasion of cheque distribution. The event was organized under a four years project funded by the Government of Germany and financed by KFW to support Reintegration and Rehabilitation for Temporarily Displaced Persons ( TDPs ) in FATA. The project is being implemented by SRSP with the support of FATA Secretariat. The project area is South Waziristan Agency, North Waziristan Agency, Orakzai Agency, Khyber Agency and Kurram Agency. The project has already been initiated recently in South Waziristan and Orakzai agencies.

Campaigns for Raising Awareness

Most people particularly women and children, in rural parts of KP and FATA are unaware about health and hygiene practices. This makes it difficult for them to prevent various diseases such as polio, dengue fever, meningitis, malaria and hepatitis etc. To overcome health, hygiene and nutrition problems, SRSP organized “Awareness Raising Campaigns” in District Dir Upper, Chitral and Bajaur Agency. These campaigns helped in disseminating health and hygiene messages to the communities. A Large number of women and men participated in these campaigns that were conducted in various schools, communal places and Government buildings. The project is funded by PPAF and implemented by SRSP.







Village Bank in Swat

A village Bank (VB) was inaugurated in village Islampur, of district Swat. This is an initiative of SRSP with financial support from the Government of Australia under Gender Equality Fund (GEF) project. The purpose of the project is to economically empower women by enabling their access to economic opportunities and enhancing their ‘power’ and ‘agency’. During the opening ceremony, 50 women received Community Investment Fund (CIF) cheques and 12 women received Income Generating Grant (IGG) cheques. Around 160 women attended the ceremony. The total grant was for Rs 660,000.

Establishing Micro Enterprise in Bajaur Agency

To enhance the productivity and increase income levels of vulnerable skilled individuals from Bajaur Agency, SRSP took an initiative for enterprise development and establishment under PPAF funded Programme for Poverty Reduction (PPR). In this connection SRSP delivered Enterprise Development Trainings to 125 people and provided Productive Assets for Micro Enterprise establishment. Facilitation in development of micro-enterprises and market linkages has also been provided. The activity is in progress in Bajaur Agency.

Education Programme of SRSP

Mohallah Committee in supervision of Local Support Organization (LSO) has constructed two additional classrooms in Government Primary School (GPS) Bilhla, a far flung and remote area of Union Council Sarikot, district Haripur. Classrooms are constructed under Take a Child to School (TACS) project funded by British Council. An inauguration ceremony was held, attended by community elders and elected members who appreciated these efforts. The project is implemented by SRSP.

Volleyball Tournament for the Youth of District Lower Dir

To promote peace and bring harmony within the communities, SRSP organized volleyball tournament for the youth of district Lower Dir. The event was organized and succeeded with the support extended by Local Support Organization (LSO) of Union Council Balambat. Beside a large number of youth, Deputy Commissioner Lower Dir, District Nazim and SRSP staff attended the event. Volleyball kits were also distributed to the players. Community Built Irrigation Schemes South Waziristan Agency

A Ground Breaking Ceremony of 8 Community built irrigation schemes was held at South Waziristan Agency (SWA). The event was organized in Political Agent Compound’s Jirga Hall. Besides community elders, Political Agent SWA Mr. Zafarul Islam, Senator Mr. Salih Shah, representatives of line departments, members of the community organizations, Pak Army and SRSP staff participated in the third dialogue. The event was organized under a four years project funded by the Government of Germany and financed by KfW to support Reintegration and Rehabilitation for Temporarily Displaced Persons (TDPs) in FATA. The project is being implemented by SRSP with the support of FATA Secretariat and Political Administration in five Agencies (South Waziristan Agency, North Waziristan Agency, Orakzai Agency, Khyber Agency and Kurram Agency.)

Women took lead in Business.

SRSP is increasingly taking up value chains approach to help poor access markets and improve their economic conditions. Very recently, an event was organized in district Charsadda under the Government of Australia funded “WEEMD” project to strengthen the fresh milk production value chain. The event was organized to inaugurate a dairy hub for 36 women and men producers. A milk chiller has been installed at the hub, which also has adequately trained Livestock extension worker, hired by women community organizations. This initiative is resulting in the collection and supply of 700 liters of fresh milk to the market every day. It is bringing profits for the low-income producers. The women community organizations foresee engagement of more women producers with the passage of time..

Empowering women: Generating incomes.

Training for 80 women in Honey bee keeping was undertaken at Chitral, Drosh, Mulkhow, Sarghuz and Reshun. All the women were also provided with honey bee hives (partially subsidized). SRSP will continue to provide technical support to the women groups for one year. Arandu valley, at the Pakistan borders with Nuristan and Kunar provinces of Afghanistan has been one of Pakistan’s most inaccessible valley. Financial Support under Poverty Reduction Project

“I used to run a small business in my village with limited variety of stocks, receiving the asset, I am able to offered an astonishing range of merchandise and to earn enough money to support my family” stated by 40 year old Ghulam Khan. Financial support is provided to 260 unemployed and skilled people belonging to Union Council Chukyatan and Bibyawar of Upper Dir, under a poverty reduction project. During a ceremony assets were transferred to skilled individuals worth Rs50, 000 each, to establish their own businesses and to bring sustainability in their livelihood. The project is funded by the PPAF-Italian Government and implemented by SRSP.

Educating Rural Women

“I could not go to school due to unavailability of educational facilities in our village. I felt like I was deaf and dumb in front of literate people. I always wished to read and write, I may not be very educated person but now I can proudly do my routine work; few basic calculations and reading/writing different names” shared by Miss Najma, student at the center.
SRSP with financial support of the Government of Australia is establishing “Adult Literacy Centers (ALCs), in three districts Peshawar, Charsadda and Nowshera. A total of 180 women will receive the course. These centers impart basic education to women and help them to learn simple arithmetic functions and social awareness. Courses are delivered in locally established centers so women don’t face conveyance issues and are encouraged to participate.
